Research: Narrative theory - Miss Begum

What is narrative and why is it important?
Narrative theory is an arrange of representation as it creates the meaning of the film as it explains a lot about the film. A narrative is a storyline, which is used in a film to explain the audience what is going on so they could understand the film easily. As we see that it is important because if the audience doesn't understand the film that they are watching they wont like it, this way they would understand it and it will be in a much easier way.

Creating meaning in text:
There are three elements which allow the audience to understand the meanings.
  • Characters: this will help the audience to create an emotion between the characters making a different type of emotion than it should be.
  • Connotation and Denotation: both will help to infer and predict what the viewer can guess the meaning behind pacifically about the objects based on the connotations, which denotation has.
  • Genre: this helps the audience to understand what it is the filming about as the narrative gives a lot of ideas based on this.

Key theorists:

Propp's theory:
Propp has created his theory about characters in 1920. his theory was what characteristic each characters had how they were the which took a big role in film industry.
  • The Hero: is a character which creates the best for the rights and changes the wrongs to a better place.
  • The Villain: the person which stops the hero to look good in the audiences face and tries to make them self better by choosing the wrong things in life.
  • The false hero: this is the person which the villain create to beat the hero as the false hero does go along with it.
  • The helper: is the one, which helps the hero to reach his aim.
  • The princess: is a reward for the hero
  • The princesses father: he awards the hero with his daughter.
Trodorov's Theory:
Trodorov has came up with this theory in 1969 and has stated that every narrative has to involves a structure. He has recommended that every film has the same narrative structure.
  • The Equilibrium- this is the stage on how the characters appear stable at the beginning.
  • The Disequilibrium- this is the stage where something distributing happens and a change occurs, which needs to be resolved.
  • The New Equilibrium- this is the stage where usually distributing is sorted and the narrative is closed.

Barthes theory:
Barthes has discovered his theory after looking at narrative and how it can be found and portrayed.
  • Symbolic: Connotation- this is a thing which is representing something else or a deeper meaning.
  • Semic: Denotations- this is the exact value of something.
  • Cultural Understanding- this is events which are recognised in different places.

Conclusion

As a result I have learnt that each character has a meaning as we have seen this in Propp's theory which has told us in detail what type of characteristic every character represents. this will help me in my As opening thriller as I will put each characters in there own position.

  1. A basic attempt here on the understanding of narrative theory and three theorists researched into.

    To improve;
-at the start, think about how audiences can create meaning through narrative structure too
-Can you research into the theory of Aristotle and then apply them to thriller films?
-link all your theory to thriller films and openings
-which theorist is best applied to thriller films?
-provide an opening of a film that is analysed using the theories
