Planning: Planning Mise En Scene - Mrs. Quinlan

Introduction:
Mise en scene is made up of five different conventions it is important in films, which they are body language and facial expression, lighting, setting, costume, hair and make-up and iconography. It is important to have mise en scene in films especially in thriller films because the audience will have a clear vision of the scene and understanding if the film is positive or negative connotations. Overall mise en scene is important as the audience pick little things and understand what is what kind of a person is the characters for example setting without a setting there is no film because even a pitch white or pitch black room is a type of setting.

Lighting:
Lighting that we use mostly throughout the film will be low-key lighting but in some parts there will be high key lighting as well as we will use natural day light colour. The low-key lighting is to portray dark and gloomy events that will take place in this opening indicating that the antagonist is in fact, the antagonist. In the first scene we see the antagonist in the graveyard which the weather is damp and very cold which represents the gloominess. As when he enters the house it will be a low-key lighting showing that there is no one in the house except from him which makes the scene seem dark because of the empty sound.

Colour:
The colour that we will be using will be dark colours which will seem a bit depressing but that it to show what type of character the man will be for example. The guy will be wearing dark colours and this will then show that the guy is representing an antagonist. As the victims will be wearing bright colours to show what they are representing as they will not only representing that they are victims but also that they are dead in the opening scene.

Costume, hair and make-up

The Antagonist: Jami Anderson
He will be wearing dark coloured suit to represent that he is an antagonist. So the audience can know who the antagonist is from the way they look and dress. Dark colours portray a lot of things for an antagonist for him it will portray the evil intentions but the suit will show that he is confident with in himself and that he is brave. He is a psycho killer which get away with the things that he does as we know this from how he gets away with everything that he does.

The Anti-Hero/ Victim: Trang Lam
She will be wearing dress which will be white to show that she was one of the victims that the antagonist had killed once. This also represents that once he had taken away the innocence that she had once till she turned into a devil which he had created out of a dead person. We know this as she will be wearing black contact lens which will show her eyes very big. As it will empathise her eyes to show that she has turned into a devil which is going to make his life hell as that what it will seem like. Her long black hair which will be dead straight will hide her identity with her pale skin.

Victims: 1, 2, 3, 4
All of the other victims will have clothing which will be like a casual day but they died at that moment. They will be wearing light coloured clothing to represent that they are innocent but the guy killed them for no reason, as it will make an effect of mystery. They will all have pale skin colour and blood all around them showing that they were killed by him.

  1. There is limited information provided on the different MES elements you will be using in your thriller opening. Some basic information is provided about costume.

    - In your lighting section, be specific about when the different lighting techniques will be used, why they will be used, and the effect you hope they will have on the audience.
    - Please include information on every setting location you will be using.
    - You must also include a section for iconography.
    - Include a conclusion in which you summarise your use of MES and how they will help you to make a conventional thriller opening.
