Planning: Production Roles - Miss Begum

Introduction:
The production roles we had made up is to ensure that the production that we make is successful.
Production roles are:
  • Director
  • Producer
  • Light Operator
  • Location Manager
  • Camera Operator
  • Editor
  • Hair, Costume & Make-up
  • Storyboard Artist
  • Sound Operator
All of these roles are very important as they all take a big part in the production. The production roles helps us to work as a team as they help us to be organised, with out these roles we would be very unorganised as this won't help at all cause the the production won't work. Our group was chosen by the teachers , but what we had to do was identify each of our group mates strengths and weaknesses as this would then help us to make us pick who would be taking what responsibility in the roles as it was very easy to pick. We had seen what they were all able to do we had seen this when we had done our preliminary task when we had taken a short clip as everyone found out what each and every person can do in the roles, which had worked good.

The Director:
The director is the one which is responsible to control and tell each and every person which is a part of the production to control them and explain what they need to do when it is needed. A director ensures that everything is going good and that everyone in the crew is doing the right thing at the right time, as they check if they follow the script which has been done by the group members. The director would need to be a good leader as they would need to have good skills to have this going the right way. The director would not be strict as if they do no one would really do listen because they won't want a leader to dictate them they would go to the director for help.
As a group we have picked Dillan to be the director for our production as we all do know that he is a good leader and has the skills to help every person in the group when needed as we do know that he would. Dillan has good communication skills which would help everyone to have a good relationship with there director. He clearly helps a lot when needed to the crew and does give effort when he is doing what he should do. He is very good at fox using when he needs to and wouldn't get easily distracted cause he knows what is the right thing to do and when.

The Producer:
The producer is the person which produces thing so for example the script. The producer works with the director and gives things that will help for the making of the film and preparing so then we can present our productions to people. The producers role is not only to create a film and leave it is also to create an environment to the crew members to work more an put the best effort that they can so the production goes well with no wrong to it. A producer is the person which puts an idea in to the middle and then everyone helps to produce that idea in to a much better thing. The producer is the person which brings an idea in to proses with there crew and stand beside every member when it is needed.
We have picked Trang to be the producer of the film as a role as we know that she is very good at giving good ideas and gives a hand to produce that idea with the crew beside us. As a group we all know how Trang is and what she is capable to do as she gives incredible ideas to the group and we know that her ideas are good and that we would be able to do it.

Lighting Operator:
The lighting operator is the person which deals with the lights and check if they are good for the scene. The atmosphere is always detected by the lights as it controls the moods of people and there feelings. The lighting is very important as this gives the audience on what type of thing will happen so they will know if it is something joyful moody or emotional from the lighting. Low lighting gives a negativity which will show the darkness. The lighting operator will need to ensure that the right lighting is used at the right stage because using a high key lighting when the is something suspicious going on won't be the right thing.
We have decided that I should be the person that is the lighting operator as I know what to do at what scene with the lighting and also know what type of lighting is used in the house that we will be taking our opening scene at. I know what kind of lighting that should be used in what part from the storyboard which was made by one of our group member. I am able to create a good look with the lighting within each part of the opening scene.

Location Manager:
A location manager is responsible for finding the appropriate location where the film scene will be set to take place. The person must ensure that the place that we will be taking an opening scene is suitable and that they have permission from the police, governmental permits and location owner before we set our cameras and start filming. The location manager will need to talk to the storyboard designer and pick the right place where the scene should be set and what type of things there should be there.
We have picked Trang to be the location manager as she is capable to find a place but we will be able to use as our setting when we are filming. We know that she knows what type of place we need when we are creating our production.

Camera Operator:
The camera operator is the person that will be taking the opening scene. This person has a very hard job as he will need to know each and every angle that we will be taking which they are all given in the story board as it is provided there. This person will need to keep the camera very still as when the camera even moves a tiny bit it makes a very big difference and it shows that it isn't good.
We have picked Dillan to take this production role as we know that he is the only one that knows how to use a camera the best. Also he knows what position he needs to take every part. He will need to work with the lighting operator as well as I know what type of lighting is needed to use but when he is taking a part and the lighting is very dark it won't work as the camera may not be able to take anything.

Editor:
The editor is the person which changes the shots that have been taken montage them. So if in a part we see a small mistake the editor can cut that part and do something to show that nothing had happened. The editor can add filters to make it look much better than before if the colours don't look good. The editor can add music if we want to have a different sound. This is the part where a opening film is created if it is done properly and it all looks good.
Our editor which we have decided in our group will be Dillan as he can manage to do all of these as he already has the techniques so he knows what to do already. Which we have seen this when we had to edit short video that we had taken to see if we can use the camera and what we had learned which this was for our preliminary task.

Costume, Hair and Make-up Artist:
The costume, hair and make-up is the person which creates a person into a character that the producer and director would like the person to create. The costume artist will need to pick a costume for each character that will be taking part in the opening scene which the clothes that they will wear need to be something there character will wear. The hair and make-up artist will need to change that person from themselves to there character which make-up will show there emotions and what kind of a person the character is.
As a group we have thought that I would be a good artist as I have the knowledge of what each characters will be like. Also from the skills I have which I had experienced in a drama play as I had done there characters as well. I have the strength of putting each person to its own character and from the opening scenes I have seen till now I know what kind of look they do to show each character.

Storyboard Artist:
The storyboard artist is the person which creates what will be done what kind of angles would be needed in every shot as they show all of them. The person will need to know the whole opening scene and must create where what is going to happen they will need to put all of the information that they have collected and needs to add it all on to the storyboard. The storyboard artist will add in every shot that will be taken with a different angle with a different movement. As the seconds that each one will be needed to be added as well these are to make life easier for the camera man as he will get an easy idea of what to do then and when how long it will be.
As a group we have picked Trang to be the storyboard operator as she had an idea on what can be done as she I the producer which helps her more at that moment. She has the skills as it will help her by doing the storyboard.

Sound Operator:
The sound operator is the person which will add in music or sounds and edit the sound which is in our opening scene. To give the emotion not only images are needed also the sound which is there at that moment puts the audience into the mode which we also show as an image. The sound operator can change the pitch the tone of each sound. If there is a dialogue which comes from the back can add in music to close the dialogue.
As a group we have picked Dillan to be the sound operator as he is good at these. He has the skills to edit sound tracks and to add it onto the opening scene. We all know as a group even if he don't know how to do it he would try and then work out how it's done. He has the knowledge on which sound would go to the shots that will be for our opening scene.

Conclusion:
Finally doing this was a good idea as we know what everyone in the group does so no one would be able to say that they don't have anything to do as they all have a role in this production. This helps us to then say not only one person has put all of there hard work in to the opening scene everyone in the group has done something to produce the thriller opening scene.

  1. Excellent evidence of planning here by assigning roles which will help the group whilst out filming and editing, well done. The roles are defined well and you justify your group choices well by relating to skills and attributes each member of the group has. Make sure as a group you all stick these roles as it will help you in all your production/post-production stages.

    To improve;
-as its your house you are filming in and Trang is a lead actress, may be worth you taking the role of the location manager
-why was doing this task beneficial to the group?
