Research: Mise En Scene- lighting and colour - Mrs. Quinlan

What is lighting and colour? Why its important and how they are used in films?

Lighting adds more intensity to a movie and helps to increase the audience’s mood, as it is used to attract the audiences eyes as they are watching the lighting will directly get higher on a particular person, emotion gesture or object. Lighting creates an emotion in the audience when they are watching and they are directly looking at the spot it is bright. Colour is where in a specific scene the colour will change so he lighting will change to a colour like blue red purple and more. An example will be a dark room the lighting will be changing to red which will affect the audience. These are very important as these leave a lot of meaning in an audience’s mind. In a film if there are no lighting when the director wants an object, person, emotion or gesture to take the audience’s attention there won’t be a way as they can’t use lighting but because there is lighting they are able to use it.

Key terms:
Angles of lighting
  • Under lighting- under lighting is when the light is coming from below the person. This will be strange and most unusual in times.
  • Top lighting- top lighting is when the lighting is above the object, as this maybe spooky and mysterious in some ways.
  • Back lighting- back lighting is when the lighting is behind the object, as this is similar to top lighting as it can be spooky and mysterious.
Types of lighting
  • Low-key- this is when the lighting is very low as it will be dark in some areas, which this can create shadows around.
  • High-key- the lighting will be very bright which will attract our eyes towards it, as everything is seen in a better way.
Conclusion

Knowing about lighting and colour gives me an idea of how in some scenes of films objects, person and the other ones which I have said at the beginning takes my attention, as I do look at the parts where the light looks straight to it. This will be helping me in my scene for Media studies, as It has given a lot of key terms for me to use by having an idea for it.

  1. There is a basic understanding of different lighting techniques, with minimal understanding of colour techniques, and how these can help create specific atmospheres or character impressions. There are minimal thriller examples used.

    - In your introduction, make your final sentence clearer about how effective lighting can be.
    - For each lighting type and angle, include a specific example from a thriller and explain its purpose in the scene selected.
    - Discuss why and how colour can be an important technique in thrillers.
    - Provide examples of colour filters used in thrillers.
    - Include a thriller opening scene analysis focusing on lighting and colour use.
    - In your conclusion, specifically state what types of lighting and colour techniques you would like to use in your thriller opening.
