What is a cinematography?
Cinematography is how the camera and photography works in film making, which these will be including the quality of the film stock, the camera lens, the depth of focus and what angle is used to take it and movements. The cinematography is an important micro-element as it gives the audience the point of view for the protagonist.
Camera angles:
- low angle- the low angle is used when they need to show an item or someone big which the look from the bottom to the top as it shows it very big well most of the time bigger than it is.
- high angle- the high angle is used when they show something or someone very short as it can be shorter than they were thinking.
Camera sizes:
- Establishing shot- This size is from a very far distance mostly used from a high place show where the character is standing.
- Long shot- is when the camera captures the persons whole body full on, as it shows from head to toe. usually they use this when they are seeing the character the first time or because of the body language.
- Close up- is when they take a shot over the shoulders, they most of the time use this in a type of mood the character is in, but when she or he gets in to the role deep in to it so they could see the emotions from the face on what is going on in that part of the film.
- Extreme close up- this is when the camera is right indirect in your face as they usually use the eyes or lips. The eye is mostly used when the character is crying and they want t see in what way the emotion is and so they could get the audience emotional as well. The lips are used when the girl character thinks of something that a person must have done, so then she had decided to bit her lips while thinking about what had happened.
- Medium close up- this usually is used from head to hips while having a conversation with someone.
Camera movements
- panning shot- is when you move the camera lens from one side to another.
- tilt shot- is when you move the camera lens up or down while you keep it horizontal axis constant.
- zoom- is when you move the cameras focal length of the lens to make the object appear closer or further away fro you.
Some examples of the key terms are..

Low angle is show in this image as high angle will be the other way round so it will show from the top of her head to the bottom which we see her tall here but when its high it will be showing her shorter than she is.
This is a close up as we see it is over his shoulders. As we also can see that the character is in a emotional mood which thats why it is a close up.
Conclusion:
Knowing cinematography now gives me the idea of how the feelings come out as it has taught me that its not only from what the characters say or from there body language it is also the cinematography that creates the emotion the whole micro elements. Now as i understand it better this will be helping me in my own scene that i will be doing later on for Media AS.
