I will be analysing how the opening scene of Scream 1 is a convectional thriller opening
by referring to micro-elements. As the film Scream is about a girl that lives
by herself, gets aghast by a phone call which she does not know who the person
on the phone is as things happen which she wasn’t waiting.
In the first
scene we see the protagonist in the living room as she walks in to the kitchen
as she is very calm, the setting is very quiet, the lighting is low-key. As a phone
call appears she walks calmly towards the phone picks it up but she does not
know who the person is, she thinks the person on the phone is just pranking her
as the voice on the phone is very squeaky she laughs for a bit then closes the
phone. The no caller calls again she picks it up the person on the phone tries
to make a conversation with Sidney but does not work she put the phone on hold.
As she walks towards the cooker and puts a pan with popcorn in it on the cooker
which is the only sound that is in the setting. As the phone rings and she picks
it up again, she seems happy that she is speaking on the phone to the
antagonist which she does not know that she still is the victim, as she carries
on walking around the table in the middle of the kitchen. She bends down toward
the table with a set of knifes are she picks one out from the set as the
popcorn starts popping at the back of the scene and it ends.
Sidney puts
the knife back where she took it from as she turns around looks outside her
body language is as if she is frightened that something is going to happen out
of nowhere, as she walks the antagonist makes a joke which she laughs to and
asks if the antagonist is asking her to a date. She walks in to the living room
put, as the items in her hand on the television and starts looking at them as
the antagonist says her name where the second scene ends with a close up where
we could see her emotions which is shown as a facial expression as she is very
frightened she is feeling that something is coming.
The
protagonist starts looking around if there are anyone in the site which she
cannot see anyone. The female puts the phone on hold as when she’s walking in the
corridor the telephone rings again as the antagonist scares her so she shuts it
on his face. The protagonist walks in to the kitchen were a long shot is taken
to show that she’s angry but scared at the same time. The phone rings again
this time she picks it up with an angry tone but as we look at her face the
facial expressions says more than anger, as she is very frightened. As we look at
the body language we also could tell that she is frightened because she runs
around and locks all of the doors, which are not locked so she could feel a bit
safe. She shuts the phone on his face as she starts crying because shes scared and there is no one next to her to make her feel safe.
The scene is very clear as there are no one around she turns around to walk back in to the living room, her body language shows us that she is panicking, because shes scared of what might happen to her. The camera is showing a long shot of her so we could see the body language. The female starts crying and out of no where the door bell rings she was in a shock because she thought the antagonist had came, the female asked who's out there as female carries on crying she picks up the phone to call the police but the antagonist calls again the antagonist asks the female about his bike, which this confuses the audience because from talking about her body the antagonist randomly asked about t
his bike, as it makes the audience think what might happen.

A basic attempt to deconstruct the opening of Scream using some micro-elements.
ReplyDeleteTo improve;
-discuss her character representation. Is she conventional of the thriller genre? How do the audience feel about her?
-in the first scene, what feelings does the low-key lighting bring to the scene?
-there is a generally good description of the scene, but you must draw upon the use of micro-elements, in particular for your first two paragraphs. Identify uses of cinematography, editing, sound and mise en scene more
-think about how the events make the audience feel
